Virginia Wines come to the UK

The Oxford Wine Company has just taken on three wines from the state of Virginia on the east coast of the US.

The merchant claims the most successful styles from this relatively uncelebrated American wine-producing state include Bordeaux blends and Viognier.

Theo Sloot of the Oxford Wine Company said that upon conducting a tasting of numerous wines from the region, two wineries in particular stood out for their quality, one was Boxwood Winery in Middleburg, an area renowned for its horse farms.

Boxwood uses consultant winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt to produce its Bordeaux blends, which Sloot advises “display more typicity” than the California take on Bordeaux blends.

The second notable producer for Sloot was White Hall Vineyards in Monticello, an area not far from Thomas Jefferson’s original home. White Hall  is particularly noted for its Viognier, with Sloot saying: “We were impressed by the restrained and aromatic qualities of this wine which provide a strong contrast to many overblown examples from the New World.”
