Thierry’s extends Cape family

Independent wine importer Thierry’s has added two new producers to its extensive South African portfolio.

The new offerings, which are designed to compliment Tierry’s current Cape family, come from Oak Valley from the region of Elgin and Schalk Burger from the warmer Wellington region.

Oak Valley, a premium wine producer with some of the top high altitude vineyards in Elgin, specialises in Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Pinot Noir.

Schalk Burger is owned by the ex-South Africa rugby star of the same name and is the internationally recognised name behind the Meerkat label, otherwise known as “South Africa’s most gregarious wine”.

Lindsay Talas, buying director for Thierry’s, said: “We are delighted to welcome Oak Valley and Schalk Burger to the Thierry’s fold and we are confident that these new additions will further enhance our already strong South African offerings, complementing the other wineries in our portfolio.

“It also underlines Thierry’s commitment to the South African wine category and our belief that the Cape remains an excellent source of good value, high quality wines across all price points.”

Although best known for its strong French offerings, the Cape is a key area for Thierry’s, which imports around 10% of South African wine to the UK.

The company is working closely with its producers on various Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) projects and is also busy developing Fairtrade offerings.

The company’s extensive South African portfolio includes KWV, Ken Forrester, Danie de Wet, Diemersfontein (including BBBEE, Thokozani), Excelsior, Bellevue (including BBBEE, Sizanani) and Golden Kaan.
