Graham’s Port has released an 80 Year Old Tawny Port for the first time in its two-century history, following the creation of a new 80YO category by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP) in January.

Crafted from wines dating back to the 1940s, the rare expression was originally blended by Charles Symington, head winemaker and recently appointed Co-CEO of Symington Family Estates (SFE), to celebrate the 80th birthday of his father, Peter Symington.

Only 600 bottles of the wine will be released worldwide, with around 100 allocated for the UK market. The port will carry a recommended retail price of £1,700 per 75cl bottle.

Speaking about the release, Charles Symington said: “My father was born in 1944, the midst of World War II, and his early childhood was shaped by the post-war recovery in a time of profound uncertainty.”

He continued: “Several of the wines that comprise this special blend date from the 1940s, and the decades they have spent ageing have resulted in a truly magnificent old port. It was a privilege to mark my father’s 80th birthday with this remarkable wine, and now, it is an honour to share it with the world.”

The blend is described as having aromas of walnuts, treacle, coffee, and dried figs. On the palate, it offers layers of soft caramel, mandarin orange, praline, and vanilla, with a finish of tobacco and black tea. A discreet acidity is said to give the wine a sense of freshness and balance.

The 80 Year Old Tawny Port joins Graham’s existing Aged Tawny Collection, which already includes 40 and 50 Year Old expressions. The presentation has been inspired by long-living tree and plant species found in the Douro Valley, intended as symbols of longevity and the slow passage of time.

Founded in 1820, Graham’s is one of the most recognised producers of aged ports and is owned by Symington Family Estates, a fifth-generation family-run business based in northern Portugal. The news of the release follows other recent developments that Symington are set to open a €6 million Port Townhouse in the heart of Porto.
