Glynn Purnell launches wine bar

Chef Glynn Purnell is due to open a wine bar and restaurant in Birmingham this summer after closing his Michelin-starred restaurant last autumn.

Purnell shut up shop at Purnell’s in Birmingham after 17 years in business in October 2024.

At the time of the closure, Purnell said: “The world doesn’t stand still. Things have moved on, and times have changed. In this current climate, no-one is bulletproof.”

After it was closed there was controversy as customers with vouchers for the restaurant were unable to secure refunds, though it is understood that this has been resolved.

However, now the chef has bounced back with plans to open a new spot in Birmingham’s Snow Hill neighbourhood in partnership with Midlands wine merchant Loki Wine this summer.

The menu of the so-far-unnamed restaurant will, according to an interview Purnell did with Restaurant, focus on small plates.

“There’s a movement in London at the moment for people going out for a good glass of wine and a couple of small plates and then moving into the next place, so we want it to be that sort of place really,” said Purnell. “You can come for a glass of nice wine, whether it be with a Coravin or just something really interesting and have a few dishes or do the whole whack and have something bigger.”

Purnell also said that the project would be “very different” to his previous ventures. While Purnell’s may be closed, the Brummie chef’s tapas restaurant, Plates by Purnell’s, as well as his The Mount Pub at Henley in Arden.
