Is the ritual of wine facing extinction?

A recent study shows that traditional wine rituals are waning among Generation Z. Only 43% have used a corkscrew, and just 18% have experimented with a decanter. This shift towards convenience raises questions about the future of wine appreciation.
The survey, conducted by alcohol-free wine brand Eisberg, highlights a generational move away from the ceremony of wine drinking. Dan Harwood, managing director for Eisberg’s SW Wines Europe, commented: “We’re witnessing a fascinating change in the way younger generations interact with wine.”
He continued, “the time-honoured traditions of wine, from using a corkscrew to decanting, are being replaced by a grab-and-go mentality. “While this evolution in drinking habits isn’t necessarily negative, it does suggest that a certain romance and ritual around wine could be fading.”
A shift in drinking habits
This trend reflects broader changes in how younger consumers drink. Recently, a report by db found that about 25% of Gen Z consumers choose low- and no-alcohol drinks for their lower calorie content and functional benefits.

At the same time, wine’s traditional image may not resonate with Gen Z’s values. The Guardian reported that some younger drinkers see wine as ‘stuffy’ and lacking transparency around health implications, which may discourage them.
Adapting to a changing market
In response, the wine industry is adopting new approaches to attract younger consumers. ‘Wine raves’ which mix nightlife culture with wine tasting are one example of how producers are making wine more accessible and appealing.
Meanwhile, sustainability is also shaping purchasing habits. Gen Z increasingly prefers wines that align with their environmental and ethical values. As a result, wineries are focusing on transparency and eco-friendly practices to meet this demand.
As drinking habits evolve, the industry faces a challenge: how to modernise wine culture while preserving its traditions. Whether this marks the end of classic wine rituals or the start of new ones remains to be seen.
