Champagne Gosset launches cuvée to honour past matriarch
By Patrick SchmittChampagne Gosset has launched a pink cuvée in a clear glass package to honour Suzanne Gosset, who ran the house through both World Wars and introduced the first rosé in a transparent bottle.
Named after this pioneering matriarchal figure, who was mother to Albert Gosset – who created the maison’s ‘necklace medallion’ logo – Suzanne led the Champagne house through the years of war from 1914 and then again for ten years after the death of her husband, André Gosset, in 1955.
Among her many initiatives, in 1947, Suzanne introduced clear glass bottles to the Gosset line-up, while she was also responsible for adding a rosé to the range – a style of Champagne that has been a strong focus for Gosset ever since.
In fact, this is not the first cuvée created in Suzanne’s honour, with her son, Albert launching a Brut Rosé in her memory in 1985, 15 years after her death, which was housed in a bottle adorned with roses.
Suzanne’s grandson, Antoine Gosset, is still alive, and was the person responsible for selling the maison to its current owners, the Renaud Cointreau family, following Albert’s death in 1993. Due to this connection to a living relation, the work on the new cuvée has been dubbed ‘project grandmother’ by the Gosset team.

As for what’s in the bottle, the new expression is a pale copper-coloured non-vintage Champagne dominated by base wines from the 2017 harvest. in terms of varietal mix, it contains 65% Chardonnay complemented by 17% Meunier and 11% Pinot Noir, as well as 7% red wine from Cumières to bring colour and red fruit flavours.
Although not a vintage expression, the rosé contains a relatively small proportion of wines from older harvests, comprising just 10% ‘reserve’ wines.
Only 5,000 bottles have been made of its launch expression, and the wine has been given a more traditional dosage of 11g/l, which adds a pleasing creaminess to the Champagne, which, in keeping with Gosset house style, does not go through the malo-lactic fermentation.
The Cuvée Suzanne Gosset was officially launched at Prowein and now retails in France for €72, which places it a little below Gosset’s line of vintage Champagnes and at a similar price to the maison’s blanc de blancs NV.
