Higher yields approved for Picpoul de Pinet AOP
The French Ministry of Agriculture has approved significant updates to the Picpoul de Pinet AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) specifications, introducing changes aimed at increasing production efficiency while supporting sustainable viticulture.
The updates allow a maximum average parcel load for irrigated vineyards of 8,500 kilograms per hectare, up from the previous limit of 7,500 kg/ha. Standard yields have been raised from 55 to 66 hectolitres per hectare, with the maximum yield now set at 72 hl/ha, compared to the earlier 66 hl/ha limit.
Environmental sustainability is a central focus of the new specifications. Vineyards must now adopt mechanical or physical methods for vegetation control between rows. The use of plastic mulching and chemical weeding on headlands has been banned, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly practices.
UK market success
Picpoul de Pinet wines are firmly established in the UK market, both in the on and off-trades. Exclusively crafted from the Piquepoul Blanc grape variety, the wines are produced in six communes within the Hérault department: Castelnau-de-Guers, Florensac, Mèze, Montagnac, Pinet, and Pomerols.
This region, known locally as “La Marine,” boasts a rich history of white wine production dating back to Roman times. Its terroir, defined by deep, well-drained soils and maritime influences, imparts the characteristic floral and citrus aromas, alongside a pronounced minerality and lively acidity that distinguish Picpoul de Pinet from other white wines, making it a mainstay in UK supermarket summer ranges.
