‘Colossal’ North American wine collection breaks three records at Sotheby’s NY sale
The first tranche of one of the largest wine collections from North America to come to the auction market raised US$1.465 million in New York last week – the middle of its pre-sale estimate – and also broke three records.
The first part of The Colossal Cellar of an Astute Collector sale was 95% sold by lot (751 out of 788 lots offered) with more than a third (34%, or 266) of the lots sold achieving prices above their high estimates.
The top lot was a three-bottle lot of Montrachet 2020 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which sold above its high estimate of $20,000 – $30,000 to achieve $23,750. Meanwhile, three world records were made, including seven bottles of Chablis, Vaillons 2020 Vincent Dauvissat (lot 544, US$1,750, against an estimate of $650- $950); 12 bottles of Morey St. Denis, Premier Cru 2019 Domaine Dujac (lot 22, US$3,250, against a pre-sale estimate of $1,200 – $1,800) and sox magnums of Chassagne Montrachet, Les Chenevottes 2020 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey ($2,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $900- $1,300, lot 514).
The collection, which was overwhelmingly comprised of Burgundy (525 lots) was built with “decades-long dedication”, Sotheby’s head of auction sales for the Americas, Richard Young, said before the sale, resulting in “an extraordinary assembly of some of the most sought-after wines globally,”
It included wines from Domaine Rousseau that had “to be seen to be believed”, Domaine Bruno Clair, DRC, Vogüé, Domaine des Lambrays, de Montille, Dujac, Faiveley, Fourrier, Jean Grivot, Méo-Camuzet, d’Angerville, Sylvain Cathiard, Robert Chevillon, Roumier and Joseph Drouhin. Of there 156 or so Bordeaux wines, there were a selection of First Growths, Super Seconds and “Right Bank properties in gold standard vintages”, according to Serena Sutcliffe while the remainder comprised a selection of wines from Ornellaia, Solaia, Sassicaia and Napa Valley, along with 18 lots devoted to Champagne and one to the Loire.
The auction attracted collectors from across the Americas, Europe and Asia, Sotheby’s said.
