Claude Bosi’s Socca suddenly closes

Socca, the Southern French-inspired Mayfair bistro launched by Claude Bosi and Samyukta Nair early last year, closed its doors for the final time at the weekend.

Ahead of the launch of Socca on South Audley Street in February 2023, Bosi said: “It has been a dream of mine to open a bistro in Mayfair for as long as I can remember. It is such a pleasure to be fulfilling this with my dear friend Sam.”

Drawing inspiration from Bosi’s upbringing in the South of France, Socca received a mixed reception, with Jay Rayner writing in The Observer that while much of the food was “very good” there were certain “missteps…which baffle” with certain dishes, and that it was “punishingly expensive”.

However, Saturday 30 November marked the restaurant’s final service – a statement from Bosi and Nair released on the day simply shared that the decision had to been taken with a “very heavy heart” and thanked the restaurant’s patrons.

“Mayfair has become our home,” read the statement. “A place for both locals and visitors to enjoy seasonally-led Provençale dishes.”

As to why the restaurant would close just shy of its second anniversary, and at the start of the Christmas trading period, traditionally the most profitable time for hospitality businesses, precise reasons have not yet been given. To add to the sense that this was a very abrupt closure, Socca’s winter offerings, including a “festive” afternoon tea and its collaboration with lifestyle marketplace Glassette on an “immersive art takeover”, were being advertised just prior to 30 November’s announcement.

db has reached out to Bosi’s representation for further comment.

The two founders certainly have other new projects to keep them busy. Bosi opened Lyonnaise-style restaurant Josephine Bouchon with his wife, Lucy Bosi, in Fulham at the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, Nair was reportedly intent on opening a casual Italian eatery in Mayfair.
