Viña Maquis: why 2014 and 2020 were right for this year’s La Place campaign
Viña Maquis winemaker Ricardo Rivadeneira Hurtado tells db why two vintages of the Franco and Viola wines were a “treat for our customers”.
This September, Viña Maquis released the new vintages of its icon wines on La Place de Bordeaux, choosing the 2014 and 2020 vintages of both its Maquis Franco and Viola for release.
The winery, based in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, took part in the third edition of Tasting La Grande Place, a prestigious event that brought together a small and select group of wineries from outside Bordeaux, all represented by Excellence Vin, to showcase our new releases.
Winemaker and executive director Ricardo Rivadeneira Hurtado presented the wines during the Tasting La Grande Place, and tells db what makes the 2014 and 2020 vintages of these two single varietal wines ideal for this year’s release.
Why did you choose the 2014 and 2020 vintages?
“Since we started working with La Place in 2022, every year we’ve launched a young vintage and an older vintage of Maquis Franco and Maquis Viola. We know some other Chilean producers launched their 2022 vintage this September through the negociants, but as a treat to our customers we like to launch wines that are more ready to be enjoyed as a young vintage, and 2020 has a great balance between youth and drinkability.”
What were the conditions of these years and how has it had an impact on the wines?
“Even though 2020 was a warm vintage in Chile, the cooling effect of the rivers that surround the Maquis vineyard and an earlier picking helped to give Franco and Viola great freshness.
In September we also launched Maquis Franco and Viola 2014 as our older vintage. These are powerful and exuberant 10-year-old wines from a vintage with very low yields because of a specially cool spring and a mild summer.”
Why is it valuable for Maquis to be included in an event like Tasting La Grande Place?
“For us it is great to have the opportunity to participate every year at the Tasting La Grande Place, organised by Excellence Vins. It gives us a unique opportunity to present our wines to almost all the most important Bordeaux Negociants and their teams, and all this in a great setting where you always have a chance to escape for a few minutes and taste a few of the other international wines sold through La Place.”
