The Macallan rounds off 200th anniversary with new release

Edrington has unveiled a limited-edition The Macallan, a Sherry-finished single malt Scotch whisky inspired by Jerez de la Frontera to round off a year of exceptional 200th anniversary celebrations.

The Scotch, the third release in the brand’s A Night on Earth Series, has been matured in a combination of European and American Sherry seasoned oaks casks and is inspired by Jerez de la Frontera in Spain, where The Macallan’s casks are crafted and Sherry seasoned.

The brand, which is owned by Edrington, has collaborated with Jerez-born artist María Melero who has drawn on the festive period in her home city to create the designs on the release’s gift boxes. The outer design feature a crimson sky and vivid sunset across the vineyards in Jerez, along with roses that grow in the vineyards and act as a natural warning system of potential threats to the soil or the vines. The inside of the box features traditional Jerez ‘azulejos’ (wall tiles) with icons representing celebrations for The Macallan and Jerez, including casks to stills to the flavours of oranges to vine leaves.

Whisky maker Steven Bremner noted that Jerez played a crucial role in The Macallan’s past, as well as its present and future.

“As a whisky maker, having been able to tell part of that story through a whisky has been wonderfully rewarding. A combination of European and American Sherry seasoned casks has enabled us to capture the flavours, traditions and María’s memories of New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of Sherry wine,” he said.

The limited edition The Macallan A Night on Earth collection has previously drawn inspiration from Scottish shortbread for the first expression A Night on Earth in Scotland, followed by rice popcorn vendors and sweet steamed rice pudding for the second release, The Macallan A Night on Earth The Journey.

It is available in the UK from select retailers, including Selfridges, Berry Bros. & Rudd, The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt, as well as The Macallan itself (RRP: £110).
