MA Silva combines AI with sustainability and innovation
Portuguese bottle cork closure manufacturer MA Silva has announced its latest innovation in premium corks, combining sustainability with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
Based in Mozelos, Feira in Portugal, MA Silva has been a leading producer of cork stoppers since its founding in 1972. With a focus on sustainable practices and innovation, the company has deployed new AI technology to launch its latest venture by launching Nobeltech and Nobel Corkstoppers. The initiative aims to set a new standard in the cork industry, offering ‘the most efficient and sustainable corks available on the market’. According to MA Silva, the new product line provides stakeholders with a superior option combining tradition, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
Cork, sourced 100% from the Iberian Peninsula, is at the core of MA Silva’s new technology and product. The natural material undergoes processing through innovative technology integrating three advanced systems to achieve high-performance results. The company is dedicated to vertical integration, ensuring total control over every production stage, from cork harvesting to manufacturing.
The first key feature of the new technology is Sara Advanced sensory uniformity. The process includes continuous and automatic extraction of volatiles, controlled temperature checks with pressure and dry steam, and the elastic memory of cork, which is maintained and used to ensure the integrity of the product.
Nobeltech uses Bioniceye AI and Machine learning as the second feature, which utilises state-of-the-art ultra-sensitive cameras that enhance sustainability and efficiency. The 5.0 technology includes piece-by-piece selection and grading of the product to ensure the highest performance and quality. The third technology employed by Nobeltech and Nobel Corkstoppers is thermal radiation using the Ray System. The tool enhances TCA extraction to remove chemical compounds that can contaminate wine and cause defects. In addition, the system desorbs other volatiles to preserve the humidity of the cork stoppers.
MA Silve is dedicated to reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by using energy from solar panels and biomass, achieving a negative CO2 balance of -267.7g per natural cork. This sustainability focus is integral to the company’s terroir concept, emphasising the quality of raw materials from the rich regions of the Iberian Peninsula.
José Silva, CEO of MA Silva, shared the company’s vision: “The Terroir concept is essential to us as it reflects the intimate relationship between the soil and its fruits. Just as in producing exceptional wines, our high-quality cork is a product of continuous exploration by a highly specialised team in the best raw material regions of the world: Alentejo, Algarve, Extremadura, and Andalusia.”
