Customers seek refunds from shut Michelin-starred restaurant

After it closed last month, those with bookings at Purnell’s in Birmingham have complained that they have been unable to get refunds for vouchers they had for the restaurant.

The closure of Glynn Purnell’s restaurant on 12 October of this year, having opened in 2007, was just one of a series of recent high profile restaurant closures – however, Purnell’s has now been thrust back into the limelight as prospective customers are concerned that they will not get the money back on vouchers for the restaurant.

BBC News West Midlands reports that “more than a dozen” people had been in contact to say that they had been unable to secure refunds from the now-closed restaurant.

Among these disgruntled voucher buyers is Therese Roberts, who reportedly spent £500 on a Purnell’s voucher for her children last Christmas, and a further £250 on a voucher for a friend, having visited the restaurant before and had a “great experience”.

However, reportedly she only discovered the restaurant’s closure via the media, and when she contacted liquidators, she was informed that the vouchers cannot be redeemed, and their value could not be refunded.

Roberts slammed Purnell: “He classes himself as the ‘Yummy Brummie’. He blames greedy chains taking his business but he didn’t want to communicate or come to a compromise with me…I thought he was a better man than that. It’s left a rotten taste in my mouth.”

Others have also now come forward to share that they have been unable to get refunds.

Purnell, who still has his The Mount pub in Henley-in-Arden and Plates by Purnell’s tapas restaurant in Birmignham, said that the closure of his flagship restaurant was “unfortunate and unforeseen”: “We have been advised that refunds can also be requested via customers own banks and credit card companies. I can only apologise for this difficult situation.”
