Why everyone’s talking about the ‘dirty soda’ trend

The trend for ‘dirty sodas’ recently went viral on TikTok after being made popular by reality show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

Dirty sodas, which are essentially a mix of carbonated soft drinks laced with additional flavoured syrups, sweeteners and creams, which allegedly make them ‘dirty’ are now motivating consumers to move over from drinking alcoholic drinks.

According to Indy100, social media platforms have widely talked about The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives whose cast members’ love for a “dirty soda” which has led to the beginning of the trending drink.

Reports outlined how one particular clip from the Hulu series highlighted the new obsession with sugary beverages and insisted that in Episode 5, Layla Taylor, Jessi Ngatikaura and Demi Engemann all go to get their dirty soda fix.

Ngatikaura said: “I love that we’re all just going to Swig at 3pm together” with Engemann then highlighting how the sodas are now the go-to drink for them all rather than a glass of wine or a cocktail. Engemann explained: “We don’t drink alcohol or do drugs, so it’s kind of our vice.”

Taylor added: “Six out of the seven days of the week, I’m having at least one 44oz soda. I’m probably only going to live to be like 50, but it makes me happy.”

Indy 100 revealed that “dirty sodas are typically made up for your favourite fizzy drink, this can be anything from cola to root beer, lemonade or anything citrus-flavoured, but “what makes the soda dirty is the addition of different flavoured syrups, sweeteners and creams”.

Looking at the trend and why it began with appealing to Mormon’s the publication suggested that it was due to Mormons having a habit of “visiting specialised soda shops where there are an array of sodas, syrups, creamers and flavours to choose from”.

Despite this being outlined as how the trend began, it reported that now it is not just Mormons who enjoy a dirty soda after the drink went viral on TikTok, with over 13,000 posts under the hashtag, a trend that has now led to consumers resharing different flavour combinations to help boost the drinks trend further.
