Wine-dyed dress features at New York Fashion Week

A dress which has been dyed in a newly released vintage of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon has featured at New York Fashion Week.

Napa and Alexander Valley producer Silver Oak partnered with Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) finalist Jackson Wiederhoeft on his Spring/Summer 2025 NYFW show, “MANIFESTO”, to create a bespoke runway look, dyed in the newly released 2020 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Held at West Chelsea’s 548 W 22nd Street gallery in New York, the show featured Wiederhoeft’s Silver Oak-dyed look on the runway. The hand-embroidered salon corset was crafted with Silver Oak-wine stained double-faced silk satin with fully metal-boned construction and a lace-up back.

The garment bust and mid-calf wasp skirt in the Silver Oak-wine stained double faced silk satin featured poppy embroidery with beads, raffia, and pebbles.

It was dyed twice in 2020 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, once from sunrise to sunset, and for an additional afternoon to achieve the “flawless colour”, the producer said.

The show invite was etched directly onto bottles of the 2020 Silver Oak Alexander Valley, and the event culminated in the new vintage being poured and enjoyed at the afterparty, held at Asian restaurant KYU.

Silver Oak has been producing Cabernet Sauvignons aged exclusively in American Oak since 1972. The new 2020 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 95.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.1% Merlot, 1.4% Cabernet Franc, 0.7% Petit Verdot, and 0.6% Malbec. After early blending in 2021, the wine was aged for 24 months in American oak barrels handcrafted at Silver Oak’s cooperage, The Oak.

The result, according to the producer, is “a beautifully integrated Cabernet” that provided a “uniquely suited dye” for the silk garment in Wiederhoeft’s Spring / Summer 2024 collection.

The fresh partnership with the fashion designer was created to activate “the brand’s mission to support the pursuit of mastery in winemaking and beyond”, it said.
