Italian Wine Awards winners announced

The winners of the inaugural Italian Wine Awards were announced yesterday at a packed event held at the Italian Embassy in London.

The awards, which were a partnership between wine club Wine52 (the sister company to Beer52) and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), looked at the most heavily, best reviewed wines from five Italian regions on the Wine52 platform.

Opening the event, Italy’s Ambassador to the UK, Inigo Lambertini, said: “I think we can say that our country thrives on passion – history, art, music, and, of course, good food and good wine.”

“The dedication of our winemakers to tradition and to excellence is longstanding,” Lambertini continued.

“Today we produce almost 50 million hectolitres of wine, and it is one of Italy’s major exports,” Lambertini added. “The UK is one of our top markets, but we can do more, and we can do better.”

ITA director Giovanni Sacchi toasted the “strategic partnership” between the agency and Wine52, and said: “Our mission is to showcase the rich diversity and quality of wines available in the UK market.”

The winners

55 wines from 30 producers were assessed on the basis of the ratings given to them by Wine52 members. Overall, there were five regional prizes up for grabs, and one for design.

  • Puglia: Enoagrimm, Allora, Puglia IGP, 2023, (Falanghina)
  • Marche: Ciù Ciù, Bacchus, Rosso Piceno DOC, 2022, (Montepulciano and Sangiovese)
  • Abruzzo: Cascina del Colle, Terrebaciate, NV, (Merlot)
  • Veneto: Cavazza, Bocara, Gambellara DOC, 2022, (Garganega)
  • Lazio: Cantine San Marco, Ciao Estate!, Frascati DOCG Superiore, 2023 (Malvasia di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio, Grechetto, Bombino Bianco and Trebbiano)
  • Design: André Ducci for his work on Cantina di Castelnuovo del Garda, Quattro d’Oro, 2023
