Big Mamma Group expands UK footprint

Big Mamma, the French restaurant group offering its kitsch interpretation of Italian cuisine, has announced its first UK opening outside of London.

Whereas many new Italian restaurants in the UK seek to showcase how the beauty of many Italian dishes is found in their simplicity, it would be fair to say that Big Mamma does not exercise the same restraint with its gauche, Instagram-friendly eateries.

While establishments such as Circolo Popolare, Gloria and Ave Mario may not have been met particularly warmly by all critics, the formula of outrageous interiors and food clearly appeals to the punters.

Now the group has revealed that it will open a new site, called La Belleza, in Birmingham’s Chamberlain Square, in what was formerly a short-lived Vinoteca.

The 150 cover trattoria, complete with a dining terrace that seats a further 25, promises to serve high quality produce sourced from Italy.

“Our main goal as restaurateurs is to bring to life the warmth and generosity of those little trattorias you find hidden throughout Italy. La Bellezza will be the epitome of this,” commented group co-founders Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydoux. “We are hugely excited to be coming to Birmingham, not only to be part of its incredibly vibrant restaurant community but to also bring our superb Italian products, which we spent 3 years personally sourcing from small family-run artisans, to another major European city.”

In addition to its London spots, Big Mamma Group has restaurants across France, as well as sites in Monaco, Madrid, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Milan.

La Belleza is expected to open by the end of this year.
