This week in the world of drinks there was a screening of the new Madame Clicquot biopic, a sake masterclass, and a visit to a Croatian distillery.

Aura Family Distillery

James Evison visited the Aura Family Distillery during his trip to Istria in Croatia (Hrvatska). Here, he tasted Teranino red wine liqueur. Made from a family recipe, and based on fruit distillate red wine and 10 spices, it has won numerous awards, including a Master medal at The Spirits Business’ Global Luxury Spirits Masters.

In addition, he tried a number of Aura’s other drinks, including Pelinkovac brandy, which is produced by a six-month maceration period of hand-picked bitter wormwood from the slopes of the Cicarija area.

Sake masterclass

As part of its sake masterclass series, Kioku Bar at The OWO welcomed Philip Harper from Tamagawa Sake in Kyoto prefecture. Harper, the first non-Japanese sake brew master in history, presented six sakes in the intimate bar, which is already gaining a reputation for its range of more than 100 sakes. They ranged from a fresh limited edition served on ice to aged, umami-rich examples made with ambient yeast, each served with a snack from the chefs at Endo Kazutoshi’s sixth floor restaurant.

Cay Tre

Eloise Feilden headed to Vietnamese restaurant Cay Tre to try the new cocktail menu, inspired by the bustling streets of Saigon and the culinary heritage of Asia.

Founded in 2003 by Hieu Bui, Cay Tre is a cult classic on Soho’s Dean Street serving fresh, traditional Vietnamese dishes.

The new menu, which debuted this month, includes The Rising Star (left), created with Beefeater Dry Gin, Pomelo & Elderflower Aperitif and Passion Fruit & Mango Syrup. The Lychee Paradise is made with Absolut Vodka, Kwai Feh Lychee Liqueur, Lime and Sugar Syrup.

Widow Clicquot

There was a screening, complete with Veuve Clicquot reception, of new film Widow Clicquot at Soho House this week.

Widow Clicquot explores the life of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin,” explains a press release. “The 90-minute film, adapted from a 2009 biography, details her struggles and triumphs in revolutionising the Champagne industry. After the death of her husband at the age of 27, Barbe-Nicole transforms their small 18th century winery into a global powerhouse.”

Alpine Italian Wines

Petersham Cellar, the wine merchant arm of Petersham Nurseries, hosted an evening of Alpine Italian wines, accompanied by five courses of classic Italian cooking. Part of an ongoing series of tasting dinners, it paired wines from northern Italy with classic food prepared by chefs at The Petersham, Covent Garden. Pairings included Terlan Pinot Bianco with truffle croquettes and Travaglini Tre Vigne Nebbiolo with beef cheeks and hispi cabbage.
