Asda’s ‘violently iconic’ take on Whispering Angel goes viral
Asda’s tongue-in-cheek version of cult rose brand Whispering Angel, called ‘Screaming Devil’, has gone viral on social media.
The retailer released the rosé this summer, and was aiming to take a slice of the in-demand Provençal rose market with its own take on the pink stuff, which is made by Les Grands Chais de France.
It has slowly been gaining a rep across social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram and X, and blew up this week when one user on the latter platform described the wine as “violently iconic”.

Users on X were quick to praise the retailer for the tongue-in-cheek branding, which is similar to what discounter Aldi did a few years ago with its “Anti-Establishment” IPA and Brewdog’s Punk IPA — a move that also went viral and even a subsequent tie-in with the brewer.
User marley.j said it was “brilliant” and although not often going to Asda, would “be near one next week so I’ll grab a couple of those” and described it as “commendable marketing!”
Another said they “need” the bottle and one said it was “delicious”.
Emily Mckenzie said that they “actually prefer the look and design of the bottle” to Whispering Angel.
Yet another user added that “is it bad that I want to buy it just cos of it’s name?”
But it’s clear the rosé isn’t just a gimmick, with a slew of shoppers leaving it a five-star review on Asda’s website. “Fabulous,” one person raved. “It’s just as good, or better than any more expensive Provence wine. I will be back for more if it’s not all gone.”
On TikTok, Kirsty Barrett described the wine as an “absolute find” and a “fun bit of branding” as well as loving the wine.
On the same platform, Mia Whiteway’s post about the drink went viral, with an avalanche of comments praising the retailer for the branding, and also saying it was similar in taste to other famous rosé brands.
One user asked “how can they get away with it?” in relation to the naming, and another said “Asda is giving Aldi with the dupes”, while a large number said that they would have to give the wine a try.
Screaming Devil is produced in the Côtes de Provence by French winemaker Les Grands Chais de France.
