CNN broadcaster Wolf Blitzer is something of a giant in the US political mediascape, making him such a figure in Washington DC that one restaurant, El Presidente, even has a cocktail concocted in his honour.

Called the ‘Wolf Spritzer’, the US$15 cocktail is certainly a deviation from the classic spritz that one might enjoy during aperitivo hour in Italy, combining the traditional Aperol with Montelobos Mezcal, lemon and, for the spritzer element, Cava.

El Presidente is, as the name suggests, not afraid to dabble in the world of politics. Also on the menu is ‘The Elephant in the Room’, the elephant in question being a reference to the mascot of the Republican Party – the cocktail straddles the US-Mexican border with Olmeca Altos Blanco Tequila and Las Californias Native Gin, and also utilises Campari, bitter guava, and grapefruit. Additionally, there’s the ‘Air Force Uno’, a mixture of Uruapan Rum, guajillo pepper, mint, lime and grapefruit soda.

In a fitting twist of fate for Blitzer, current affairs intervened with his plans to kick back and enjoy his (almost) namesake cocktail, with President Joe Biden’s bombshell announcement that he would not be standing in the upcoming US Presidential election meaning that the veteran anchor was called in for a shift behind the desk and in front of the camera.

The timing of his post has undoubtedly contributed to its success across various platforms. At the time of writing it has more than 5,600 likes on Blitzer’s Instagram account and in excess of 30,000 on his Twitter. The original post has also spawned a series of memes:

Blitzer, who hosts CNN’s The Situation Room, is yet to tweet with a followup after he was called away from El Presidente to the studio.
