Having opened the Sager + Wilde wine bar in Hackney in 2012 alongside partner Charlotte Wilde, Sager opened the Bethnal Green restaurant in 2014, but under the name of ‘Mission’ – the decision to change it to ‘Sager + Wilde Paradise Row’ was prompted by a lawsuit over the naming rights.
The restaurant received critical praise, with one four star Evening Standard review highlighting the wine offering in particular: “A list that spans more than 250 bottles features a prominent selection of orange wines and pushes natural and biodynamic options. Its pricing structure means that if you feel like splashing out on something special you’ll be getting a particularly reasonable mark-up.”
But, having been an open for a decade, the restaurant will be shutting its doors for the final time in a fortnight.
In an Instagram post, Sager stated: “A lot has shifted in the years since opening and I feel that now is the right time for the focus to move from the restaurant to my other ventures: the original Sager + Wilde wine bar, the new neighbourhood wine bar Bruno that opened in Victoria Park this February, the cocktail bar Equal Parts, and my wine import company Sager + Wine. Although it is with sadness that I am losing the restaurant, myself and my teams are very excited for the coming chapters of the bars and the import business.”
Sager revealed that the final service at the Paradise Row restaurant will take place on Saturday 10 August. He also shared that anyone who books between now and the closure and mentions “10years” in their booking notes will get a complementary cocktail on the house.
“I’m filled with joy to be closing this business on a high, with the same amount of intent and love I opened it with 10 years ago,” he added.
db recently spoke with Sager about his newest venture, Bruno.
