Local media outlet KSBY 6 reported that Edna Valley Vineyard’s tasting room would be shutting permanently on 31 August, and that it would be selling the estate, located in San Luis Obispo. Members of the Edna Valley Vineyard club were informed of the closure by email last week.
Founder Jack Niven planted Edna Valley Vineyard largely with Chardonnay, and the estate produced its first wine in 1980.
In 2011, Gallo purchased Edna Valley Vineyard from joint venture Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines Company and Paragon Vineyard Company.
At the time of the purchase, which was for an undisclosed amount, Roger Nabedian, senior vice president and general manager of Gallo’s Premium Wine Division, commented: “Edna Valley will help us expand both our footprint in the Central Coast and in the Chardonnay category. The brand represents wines from a superior appellation and is well positioned to offer consumers wines of extraordinary value long into the future.”
In addition to Chardonnay, Edna Valley Vineyard is also planted with Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.
When contacted by the drinks business, Gallo declined to comment on the matter, though db was informed that wines by Edna Valley would continue to be sold by UK retailers.
A notice on the winery’s website reads: “We are discontinuing production of our Edna Valley Vineyard Tasting Room exclusive wines. Rest assured, the Edna Valley Central Coast Series will continue to be available in local retail stores, online in The Barrel Room, and in restaurants.”
This is not the first winery that Gallo has put on the market this year. Back in March it was confirmed that it had sold the estate and equipment of Wild Horse Winery, but not the brand, to Continental Wine Collection in a deal worth around US$8 million.
