Santa Rita wins responsible wine tourism award

The Global Wine Tourism Organisation (GWTO) has awarded Chile’s Viña Santa Rita the title of the world’s Best Responsible Wine Tourism Experience.

The award was bestowed to Santa Rita during the first Global Summit of Responsible Wine Tourism in Uruguay, which saw representatives from 14 countries participating.

GWTO president José Antonio Vidal noted that responsible wine tourism had an ability to generate a positive impact on visited destinations, ensuring that they can remain viable travel destinations for future generations. He also suggested that it involved travellers making conscious decisions before, during and after their trips, as well as the efforts of local government, the wineries, the local community, and the wider tourism industry.

Elena Carretero, Viña Santa Rita’s corporate affairs, sustainability, and tourism director, noted that the company had focused its efforts on encouraging responsible tourism to help the community and raise awareness: “With all these elements, we will
contribute to a more balanced and sustainable development of wine regions.”

Last year, Viña Santa Rita also won the prize for the Best Contribution to Wine and Spirits Tourism at the drinks business Awards, with the judges singling out the Maipo Valley winery’s 16-room boutique hotel, private park, on-site chapel, Doña Paula restaurant, café and wine shop.
