Greene King Brewery suffers fire in cooling tower

Greene King Brewery, based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, was ablaze this morning after a fire broke out in one of its cooling towers.

Speaking to the drinks business about the incident, a spokesperson for Greene King said: “A small fire broke out in the cooling tower outside our main brewery this morning, which was quickly contained.”

Greene King admitted that it is not yet clear how it began or how the fire had been caused. The spokesperson explained: “We don’t yet know the cause of the fire” which, currently, remains a mystery, but is being investigated.

The Suffolk brewer assured db that “no one was injured” and yet reiterated that the team “would like to thank the firefighters and our teams for their quick response.”

According to reports via the BBC , firefighters tackled the blaze this morning with three crews being dispatched and sent out to the brewery at around 8.33am.

Additionally, a spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was confined to an exterior cooling tower at the brewery in Bury St Edmunds and confirmed that three crews were dispatched and used jet hoses to extinguish the flames.

The spokesperson on the scene also revealed that the fire was extinguished and the firefighter crews stood down at approximately 9:25am.

Greene King has played down the blaze and told db that the situation will not affect its beer production and confirmed that, despite not knowing how the brewery blaze began, it “wouldn’t expect this to have significant impact on operations”.
