An APA that gives beer fans the ultimate ‘Simcoe Experience’

Round Corner Brewing has launched a collaboration beer with global supplier Yakima Chief Hops (YCH) to “show off what Simcoe is all about”.

The Melton-Mowbray based brewery revealed that the new 5.2% ABV beer will be an American Pale Ale (APA) named The Simcoe Experience.

The beer came to be after YCH was looking for three European breweries to trial its DynaBoost, formerly YCH 702 Trial extract, flowable whirlpool extract.

According to the brewer, Round Corner was the hop supplier’s choice in the UK because YCH believed its brew team would be capable of making a hop-forward beer showcasing Simcoe.

The aroma of the beer is said to be a blend of greengage, ripe peach, and pine and, as part of the brew, Simcoe T90 was added for flavour mid-boil to give the beer “a resinous and ripe stone fruit flavour”.

Then, according to the brewing recipe, YCH 702 Simcoe was added to the whirlpool to offer 56 IBUs of bitterness before being dry-hopped with Cryo-Simcoe.

Round Corner Brewing’s director and co-founder, Colin Paige said: “We were delighted to be chosen as Yakima Chief’s UK collaboration brewery on this project. Only three breweries were chosen in Europe for this exciting project and we are in esteemed company with To Øl from Denmark and Birrificio Lambrate from Italy.”

Paige explained: “We love Simcoe and use lots of it in our hop forward beers like Steeplechase Pale Ale. This though, was a great opportunity for us to do a single hop varietal modern APA. We combined Simcoe T90s with the DynaBoost, flowable whirlpool extract and dry hopped with Cryo Simcoe, to show off what Simcoe is all about and we just love the end product.”

YCH marketing lead – Europe, Luke Kulchstein said: “At YCH, we are always looking for the next innovation in hop science and the demand from brewers was clear – high intensity of flavour and aroma with minimal losses. That’s where our Boost series of flowable extracts come into play. The first of which is the newly named DynaBoost, formerly YCH 702 Trial extract. DynaBoost is a 10 x concentrated whirlpool extract with zero losses, giving brewers a really powerful tool to enhance their beers.

Kulchstein added: “With such a cool new product, we knew we needed some equally cool brewing partners to help us launch it. For the UK market we went right to Round Corner, knowing that Colin and the team would be able to make an incredible hop-forward beer showcasing the jewel in the YCH crown (and my personal favourite hop) – Simcoe.””

The beer has been packaged in both 30L kegs and 440ml cans and is available to order from the Round Corner Brewing webshop from this week and is available to trade customers from 22 April.

For beer fans eager to taste it, Round Corner Brewing will be pouring the beer for the first time (today) on Friday 19 April from 5pm at its taproom.
