Which sparkling wine is top of the pops for US New Year’s Eve celebrations?
The lion’s share of bottles popped to welcome in the new year belong to Champagne, according to Drizly, though its share of the sparkling wine category on New Year’s Eve fell by 2% in 2023.
What is the best way to welcome in a new year? Popping a bottle of fizz, of course.
In the US, the vast majority of consumers who celebrated with a bottle of sparkling wine chose to do so with Champagne.
Data from online retail platform Drizly revealed that Champagne’s share of the sparkling wine category on New Year’s Eve was 67%.
This was a 2% drop on 2022 figures, when Champagne accounted for a 69% share. However, the French fizz is still far ahead of its competition.
Prosecco has gained a 2% market share for New Year’s Eve celebrations year on year, but still only accounts for 17%.
Sparkling rosé, which Drizly calculates in a separate category, saw its share fall by 1% to 7% of the total category. American sparkling wine saw the same drop, down to 4%. Cava’s share remained at 1% of the category.
The final sales day of the year, Sunday, December 31, was the third-best sales date of December. As always, Champagne and sparkling wine was the top-selling subcategory with 28 percent share of sales. However, this was down from 30 percent last year.
Some Champagne consumers were trading their traditional choices – which tend to carry higher price tags – for more value-oriented ones this year as well.
