The latest Hong Kong venue with a twist: a surfing bar
A new bar in Hong Kong is making waves (literally), offering an indoor surfing experience alongside beach-themed drinks and Southeast Asian cuisine.
From tiki lounges and beer arcades to a restaurant with a hentai-themed menu, Hong Kongers are no strangers to a quirky on-trade concept.
The latest comes in the form of a surfing bar and restaurant at Airside, Kai Tak. Groundswell invites its punters to ride an indoor wave machine before sipping on cocktails or sitting down for a meal.
According to its website, Groundswell is inspired by the surf islands of Asia, namely Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Open to seasoned surfers and complete beginners, the restaurant bar offers open 60-minute sessions for HK$500 with a professional surf coach, equipment, towels, and access to locker rooms and showers; or memberships for HK$1,500 per month.

Out of the water, Groundswell’s water sports-themed restaurant and bar is led by former Potato Head Hong Kong chef Heri Raharjo.
The menu offers plates of Southeast Asian flavours inspired by Indonesian and Thai cuisine. Prawn papaya salad, gado gado, chicken satay, tom yum goong are among the signature dishes.
Concoctions whipped up at the bar are inspired by Asia’s surf destinations, with drinks including a butterfly coconut juice, Thai bubble milk tea and iced lemongrass drink, as well as alcoholic surf-inspired serves.
