Jameson joins Jameson: Irish whiskey brand signs footballer

Irish whiskey brand Jameson has signed a sponsorship deal with Newport County centre back, and namesake, Kyle Jameson for the rest of the 2023/24 season.

Jameson, who joined the League Two side this season, has previously played for the likes of Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers. He said of the deal: “I couldn’t be happier to sign for this iconic ‘club’ with so much history, what an opportunity! Now it’s time to kick on and start delivering the goods for all those Jameson fans out there.”

The partnership between the Jamesons will see the Irish whiskey brand become the official sponsor of Jameson the player’s home, away and third kits, with Newport County also showing extensive Jameson branding throughout the stadium as part of the Pernod Ricard-owned whiskey’s EFL partnership.

The decision to ‘sign’ a League Two player was to demonstrate the whiskey brand’s commitment to supporting grassroots football.

Josh McCarthy, Jameson UK Brand Director said: “What a fantastic way for us to get even more behind the grassroots game through our deal with Kyle & Newport County. Football and whiskey are all about telling stories and we have loads of great things to tell from the 72 EFL clubs.”

“This Kyle Jameson x Jameson partnership just reinforces this and shows that football stories don’t always have to come from global superstars. We look forward to sharing all the work we have planned with Kyle in 2024,” he added.

Jameson has also shown its support of grassroots football through sponsoring five-a-side tournaments. The whiskey brand recently partnered with London-based menswear label Percival on a series of shirts inspired by retro football kits.
