Prince of Wales dubbed ‘One Pint Willy’

Former rugby player and gin entrepreneur Mike Tindall has cheekily revealed what he calls the Prince of Wales on a BBC podcast series.

It may be the time of year when many head to the pub to have a few pints, but according to Tindall, the future King is not going to be one of them.

Tindall, who is married to the Zara Phillips, the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal, made the comments on the BBC’s Total Sport Podcast special series Seven: Rob Borrow. He has often be photographed socialising with both Prince William and Prince Harry over the years at official engagements and also at nightclubs and bars.

A keen drinker himself, and even the co-founder of the brand Blackeye Gin, Tindall said that the 41-year-old heir to the throne was not known to hold his drink, he claims.

Tindall said on the podcast: “The Prince of Wales is known to me as ‘One Pint Willy’ because he’s not the best of drinkers.

“Coming from a sport (rugby) where it is built on the social aspect and a couple of beers being sunk quite often.

“That is one I will definitely give away for the Prince of Wales: ‘One Pint Willy’. Sorry, sir.”

Following his comments, Zara said that Tindall was going to be “in so much trouble” about the revelation of the nickname, but also added that such banter was commonplace in the Royal household, and there were “a lot of those nicknames kind of fly around”.

It remains to be seen whether any journalists will ask the Prince or Princess of Wales for a comeback on the comment, but it is possible to suspect that Tindall himself has been, or could be given, his own nickname.
