Ukraine beer production bounces back
Beer production in Ukraine has increased by 9.3% so far this year as the country moves nearer to pre-war levels.
The news from the industry body of brewers Ukrpyvo reveals that 114.5 million decalitres have so far been produced within 10 months of 2023.
Production in Ukraine increased by 112.5% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, but the indicator is still well below the pre-war level.
A statement from Ukrpyvo said: “The expert estimate of the volume of beer production in Ukraine (except non-alcoholic beer) for ten months of 2023 amounted to – 114.5 million decaliters, and it is 109.3% compared to the same period in 2022.
“At the same time, the specified indicator is only – 72% to the production volumes of 10 months of 2021.”
In 2022 as the impact of the war hit, Ukraine beer production reduced by 27.9% to 122.8 million decalitres.
The total volume of beer production for the first half of this year was 65.2 million decalitres, which is around 76.9% of production volumes for the six months of 2021.
In May this year, beer giant AB InBev moved its production to Belgium of popular Ukrainian beer Chernihivske, which is named after the city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine and has been brewed in Ukraine since 1988.
Last year, the brewer produced a special version of Chernigivske-inspired beers to affiliates in Canada and Colombia, and eight other markets across Europe with the profits from the beer sales going to the CARE Ukraine Crisis Fund.
It also follows the Wines of Ukraine inaugural trade tasting in the UK. Twelve wineries from six of Ukraine’s wine regions hosted the first tasting in October, showing approximately 60 wines. Styles including sparkling, unfiltered orange wines and sweet wines – as well as still reds, whites and rosés, will be on offer to sample.
Svitlana Tsybak, the organisation’s co-founder, said the team’s mission is to “promote Ukrainian wines worldwide, present Ukraine as a winemaking country, and tell everywhere and everyone that Ukraine has its own place in the winemaking world”.
