Priorat’s Domaine l’Infernal sold to the Belondrade family
A sale has been completed that will see Catalonian winery Domaine l’Infernal, established by Rhône winegrowers Laurent Combier, Peter Fischer and Jean-Michel Gerin, pass into the hands of the Belondrade family.
Having been on the market since the beginning of 2023, Domaine l’Infernal has found a buyer in the Belondrade family, based in DO Rueda.
The property and 18ha vineyard, located in Torroja, will now be under the control of new owners Didier Belondrade, a pioneer in barrel-fermented fine Spanish whites, and his son Jean. Belondrade y Lurton wine, made at the organically-farmed Quinta San Diego estate, is priced at around €42 per bottle.
“With Didier’s experience and Jean’s enthusiasm, coupled with their vision of a great terroir, we are delighted to give a new lease of life to this estate, which we have taken care of and held close to our hearts for 25 years,” said a joint statement from Domaine l’Infernal founders Laurent Combier (Domain Combier, Crozes Hermitage), Peter Fischer (Castle Revelette, Aix-en-Provence) and Jean-Michel Gérin (Domain Gérin, Côte-Rotie).
The trio established Domaine l’Infernal in 2002, having already found success in the Rhône Valley, and set about cultivating the Priorat vineyard, which is planted with Mediterranean varieties including Grenache and Carignan.
“The Trio Infernal Combier Fischer Gerin adventure in the Priorat has come to an end,” the three former owners, who have been described as “true ambassadors of Priorat wine”, said in their statement.
“It has been almost three decades since we fell in love with the area and planted our vines on these schist soils to produce wines of character. For 25 years, it has shaped our daily lives and created a deep and lasting bond between us.”
Among the reasons cited for their decision to sell up were “health problems” and “a loss of motivation”, leading the three to call it a day.
A ‘Farewell’ sales operation is planned for the last vintage of L’Infernal, in stock in the Rhône-Alpes commune of Pont de L’Isère, with further details expected to be announced soon.
