The 10 most expensive Champagnes in the world
According to the latest Wine Searcher ranking, these are the 10 priciest Champagnes money can buy in 2023.
Despite the launch of various celebrity endorsed, diamond-encrusted cuvées over the past few years, the usual suspects still account for the majority of the ten most expensive champagnes in 2023.
In fact, six of the top ten placed wines come from the LVMH stable of brands, which should keep Bernard Arnault happy.
According to the latest Wine Searcher ranking, updating their 2020 version, the latest rankings are headed by Dom Pérignon P3 Plénitude Brut Rosé, which scores a fairly impressive 94 points and boasts a price of US$5,377 (£4,338.70).
Back in 2020, the same wine only reached fifth place, scoring four fewer points (90) and priced at the time at a considerably lower level of US$2,351 (£1,897.02).
In second place comes Dom Pérignon’s white P3 stablemate P3 Plénitude Brut, which sells for a barely lower price of US$5,149 (£4,154.73) but boasts a higher rating of 96 points.
Three years ago this same wine was ranked fourth in the list of the most expensive Champagnes with a score of 95, while the price was also considerably lower at US$2,610 (£2,106.01).
The first non-LVMH brand to put in an appearance comes from Louis Roederer, with Cristal “Gold Medalion” Orfevres Limited Edition Brut Millesimé; its golden bottle designed by Philippe Di Méo. This is priced at US$,4145 (£3,344.60).
Ranked fourth is Krug Clos d’Ambonnay Blanc de Noirs Brut, the price of which has also jumped significantly since 2020, rising from US$2,643 (£2,132.64) to US$3,389 (£2,734.58), while its score remains the same at 96 points.
Fifth on the list comes Dom Pérignon Oenotheque Rosé, valued at US$2,927 (£2,361.80), its price more than doubling since 2020 when it was ranked 10th with a price of US$1,247 (£1,006.20). Its score has also improved, rising from 93 to 95 points.
In sixth place, comes Bollinger RD Extra Brut “Spectre” James Bond 007 Edition, with a price of US$2,768 (£2,233.50).
Next in seventh comes the first wine from outside the ranks of the major négociants in the shape of Jacques Selosse Millésimé, highly ranked with a score of 95 points and seriously priced at US$2,626 (£2,118.92).
The fourth Dom Pérignon cuvée, the Réserve de L’Abbaye, with a price of US$2,467 (£1,990.62) comes eighth.
This is followed by Krug Clos du Mesnil Blanc de Blancs Brut in ninth position at US$2,288 (£1,846.19).
Holding the final position is Louis Roederer Cristal Vinothèque Edition Brut Rosé Millésimé with a price of US$2,208 (£1,781.64), up from US$1,262 (£1,018.31) in 2020.
It seems, however, that the highest ranking cuvée in 2020, namely Moët & Chandon Esprit du Siècle Brut, priced at an eye-watering US$6,813 (£5,497.41), would have topped the table again, but for the very limited number of bottles on offer. The price for this wine has apparently risen to US$8,771 (£7,077.32), but due to a lack of availability it didn’t match the criteria for this year’s list.
