Moth achieves B Corp certification
Canned cocktail producer Moth has become the first ready-to-drink (RTD) company in the UK to achieve B Corp status.
B Corp certification has become a major trend in the drinks industry, with a number of producers, ranging from distilleries to wineries, pursuing it. Ellers Farm Distillery in Yorkshire was one such recent recipient.
The certification, issued by non-profit organisation B Lab, assesses the social and environmental sustainability of these businesses.
Moth, which was recently named as the UK’s fastest-growing RTD brand, has, according to a press release from the company, “worked hard to establish fair pay (with regular reviews), personal development budgets and generous annual leave”.
With regards to the company’s environmental credentials, Moth collaborated with climate impact measurement service Zevero and found that the production of its bestselling canned Margarita results in 33.54% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a consumer assembling the cocktail from scratch.
Sam Hunt, who co-founded Moth with Rob Wallis, said of the milestone achievement: “It’s a genuine thrill to become a B Corp business and be part of a global community building an inclusive and sustainable economy that looks after people and the planet. This is just the beginning of our journey: we look forward to continuing to work with our team and suppliers to reduce our environmental impact as Moth continues to grow.”
Sarah Holland, beer, wine and spirits buyer at Waitrose, said: “Our customers have been enjoying MOTH’s premium canned cocktails since 2021 and we’re thrilled to see them achieve B Corp accreditation. It’s a testament to their commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices in an industry that is evolving rapidly. We are proud to stock their British made and produced cans on our shelves knowing that they align with our values and provide our customers with quality and consistency in every sip.”
