Vinitaly International boss toasts podcast and book success

Mamma Jumbo Shrimp, the media agency and publishing house founded by Vinitaly International managing director Stevie Kim, has recently reached two major milestones.

Kim founded Mamma Jumbo Shrimp in order to communicate about Italian wine, and wine culture, to a wider, anglophone audience.

Launched in 2017, when it amassed 17,000 listens, The Italian Wine Podcast has grown and grown, with daily episodes covering everything from wine tourism, marketing, and inclusion. There are now in excess of 1,400 recorded episodes and this summer the podcast is expected to break the six million listens mark.

Reflecting on this achievement, Kim said: “The Italian Wine Podcast continues to evolve, reflecting the needs and expectations of our listeners and the industry more generally. We’ve launched a couple of new shows recently which tackle some of the most important issues currently facing the wine sector – youth engagement with Victoria Cece and the American market with Juliana Colangelo. Both of these new hosts bring vibrancy and a sense of fun to proceedings but, more importantly, behind them is a genuine commitment to addressing the big issues currently facing the industry.”

It isn’t just digital media that is giving Kim, and Mamma Jumbo Shrimp, a reason to smile. Italian Wine Unplugged 2.0, a textbook offering a comprehensive guide to the world of Italian wine and winemaking with contributions from Professor Attilio Scienza (including his groundbreaking research on the topic), has won the prestigious International Organisation on Vine and Wine (OIV) Award 2023 in the Wines and Territories category.

Concerning this, Kim said: “The overarching aim of the Mamma Jumbo Shrimp brand is to make complex concepts accessible. With over 600 officially recognised native wine grape varieties, there’s no doubt that the world of Italian wine is complex. But, with the help of a global community of wine experts and ambassadors, we’ve achieved something very special with Italian Wine Unplugged 2.0 and are absolutely thrilled to have received this prestigious award from the OIV, which has been a reference point for international viticulture since the 1930s.”

The award will be given during a ceremony in Paris later this year.
