Outlander star launches bottled-in-bond Bourbon
Graham McTavish, who plays both Dougal MacKenzie and William ‘Buck’ MacKenzie on hit TV series Outlander, has announced the launch of The Warchief, a bottled-in-bond seven-year-old Bourbon.
In an Instagram video on his personal account announcing his new venture, the Scottish actor, who also appeared in The Hobbit films and The Witcher Netflix series, said: “I’ve been working on this for a while, it’s something I am really, really passionate about.”
“It’s seven year bottled-in-bond Bourbon whiskey, which very modestly has my name on it,” McTavish joked. “It’s a dream of mine from when I was very young in Scotland, when I thought about the journey that I wanted to take in life – going to America, and the opportunities that gave me. This is the distillation of that experience…”
“I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you enjoy what I’ve put into it, which is real passion, and it’s bloody delicious. Slàinte,” concluded McTavish.
The spirit is allegedly the first celebrity-backed bottled-in-bond Bourbon, bottled-in-bond being a US certification introduced in the late 19th century that guarantees that a whiskey was produced by a single distillery, was aged for a minimum of four years in a bonded warehouse, and was bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
Its aromatic profile is described on the McTavish Spirits website as “a sweet aroma of vanilla with a hint of caramel & chocolate on the nose” from the corn mash, with the rye lending “cinnamon, fruit cake and baking spices”.
On the back of the palate, its described as offering “nice subtle spice and dark cherry”, with “sweet vanilla on the tip of the tongue”.
It takes its name from character Dougal MacKenzie’s role of ‘war chieftain’ of Clan MacKenzie.
The whiskey retails for US$75.
McTavish follows in the footsteps of Outlander co-star Sam Heughan, whose Sassenach spirits brand has expanded to include a single malt whisky, Tequila, and also a gin – the latter of which was recently released in the US market.
Heughan and McTavish co-wrote bestselling book Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other, and starred in accompanying documentary road trip series Men in Kilts.
