Green tech is the way forward, says Crealis CEO

Michele Moglia, the CEO of the Crealis Group, discusses being a leader in the capsule and closures market and why bio-based closures are the future.

Tell us about your background, and how you came to your current role.

I am CEO of the Crealis Group, carrying on a successful entrepreneurial history that began in 1957 with Enoplastic Italy.

Why is the choice of closure so important for wine brands?

At Crealis we feel that closures open new opportunities. The creation of a great wine can take months, years, even decades. From the dedication of the work in the vineyard, through the experience of the winemaker, without forgetting the designer who builds the most appropriate image to present the wine in its entirety, opening a bottle is the final step of an exciting journey. Look at the wine, the packaging, the story behind the wine and the winemaker, and select a wine that is part of the journey to enjoyment.

Which markets show the most promise for closures?

We have seen a clear trend of premiumisation, both in wines, with a bigger growth in sparkling wines, and in spirits. Premium spirits sales are now above the 2019 (pre-Covid) situation. We are convinced that sustainability is the only way forward. As a result, our dedicated research-and-development team has created a new closures line called Green Tech, encompassing solutions that are either bio-based, circular, or compostable, without ever having to compromise on design.

Are we set to see a big boom in any closure styles?

Elegance seems to be a driver of a lot of styles today. In the capsules and closures that we produce, we see elaborate designs in which the details make the difference. We also see a growing request for solutions against counterfeiting, in which the capsule, via different options, is used as a seal of guarantee that ensures the wine’s authenticity.

If you could achieve one thing in the next five years for this industry what would it be?

We would like to raise the bar of new sustainable materials, as well as challenge the market, the industry and suppliers, to find new less impactful materials.

What is the ethos that guides the company, and why it is important for further growth?

Just like the brands it unites, Crealis is a combination of the words ‘creation’ and ‘listening’, which confirms its status as an innovator that listens to the specific requirements of its clients, its suppliers and all other stakeholders. We believe in a world where every detail matters; where sustainability meets efficiency, and where innovation and design drive preference.
