Blur’s Alex James enters ice in wine debate
Blur bassist and cheesemaker Alex James has entered into the debate about whether ice should be put into wine by recommending cubes in his new fizz brand Britpop.
James made the comment in a video posted on his Instagram page, showing himself with a glass of the fizz filled with a large number of ice cubes.

He said, to a backdrop of pouring rain, that it was “lovely straight-up or you can try pouring it over ice if it’s sunny. ‘en piscine’ as they say in France – in the swimming pool – I’ll drink to that. Cheers.”
He also said that the sparkling wine was “perfect for the good times” and was “great at lunchtime, great at dinner time, great at breakfast time, great in the Great British summertime”.
The news comes as James launched the sparkling under his Britpop drinks brand. Made with 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, it was produced in collaboration with Furleigh Estate, which is located close to where James grew up on Dorset’s Jurassic coast.
James said that the Furleigh Estate wine came out on top in a blind taste test of sparkling wines, including expressions from Champagne, in search for the ideal sparkling wine to add to his Britpop range.
It also follows the ongoing debate about whether to put ice in wine, with a member of staff at an Australian bar describing the move as ‘bogan’, and famous chef Dave Chang claiming that ice in wine was ‘delicious’.
