Australian cricketer reveals ‘vodbulls shared’ with England team after Ashes

Australian cricketer Travis Head has added further information about what happened in the nightclub after post-Ashes drinks controversy.

Following the much-debated run-out of Jonny Bairstow in the second Ashes test, which resulted in the Australian media describing English cricketers as “cry-babies”, according to reports, the Australia team waited outside the dressing room of the England team at the Oval cricket ground after the final fifth test to share a few brews, but at around 11pm left the venue empty-handed.

Although the Australian press was quite to view the situation as a ‘snub’, England captain Ben Stokes later confirmed on social media that the various presentations for retiring cricketers, including Stuart Broad, meant the team was delayed. Instead, they met up ‘in the night club’.

Head has now confirmed on the Willow Talk podcast that some of the team did indeed meet up in the nightclub after the final test.

He said: “I think it was a Monday night, but there are not many places to go on a Monday night in London, so we found ourselves at the same place… shared one or two vodka Red Bulls together and then off to the flight.

‘”here was a few boys that I know – Ben Duckett was sort of chirping me a little bit about us dogging them and I chirped in a little bit about them dogging us, so all in good spirits,’ he laughed.

“Like I said, I think it was all a bit laughed off from us, and then the media played it up a little bit. It wasn’t meant to be, but those things happen.”

The news follows a heated Ashes series, with a limited edition ‘English Bitter’ sent directly to the England cricket squad by Asahi-owned brewer Victoria Bitter, following the Ashes’ stumping controversy of Jonny Bairstow at the end of an over during this summer’s second Ashes test, when it wasn’t clear if the ball was in play or not.

The debate has raged since on both sides of the world as to whether the ruling was in the “spirit of the game”.

It has caused ire in Australia and its national press, after former controversies involving the England team where they benefited from debatable decisions, and resulted in numerous images and memes of England cricketers as crying babies.

Shortly after, the controversy, McCullum said he couldn’t see the two teams sharing a post-series beer “any time soon”.

Last month, it was also announced that former Aussie captain Ricky Ponting’s wines were to land on UK shores, due to a deal with Ocado, causing the Sydney Morning Herald to ask ‘Can Ricky Ponting sell wine to the English?’.

Although the series is now over, perhaps you can join Stokes and Smith in a post-game drink from our list of Top 10 Ashes drinks.
