Jeremy Clarkson shows how to defuse explosive cider
Motoring journalist, farmer and drinks magnate Jeremy Clarkson has shared how to safely open bottles of Hawkstone Cider after it emerged that some of them could potentially explode.
Hawkstone Cider was launched by Clarkson and Kaleb Cooper, who shot to fame on Amazon Prime documentary series Clarkson’s Farm, in April last year as an extension of Hawkstone’s lager.
On Friday (21 July), Clarkson broke the news that there was a faulty batch of bottles that could go boom:
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
There’s been a massive cock up and as a result, there’s a very slim chance, some of our Hawkstone CIDER bottles might, there’s no easy way of saying this, explode. If the cap has the code L3160, open it underwater, pour it away and get in touch for…— Jeremy Clarkson (@JeremyClarkson) July 21, 2023
The reason that those particular ciders come with a risk of exploding is, as revealed by the Hawkstone Instagram account, due to a small amount of the beverage “over fermenting”, leading to a build up of pressure in bottles.
Now Clarkson has given a tutorial for how customers should safely open the bottles. In the video, he jokingly suggested that hi vis jackets are a necessity when dealing with the dangerous bottles, though Hawkstone does strongly advise wearing thick gloves and eye protection:

Hawkstone has said that those who have bought some of these faulty ciders should send a photo of the caps with L3160, and they will be compensated either with a new batch or a refund.
