Glenfarclas Distillery releases 20-year-old Port Pipe Decanter

Pol Roger Portfolio has announced the release of the second in its series of limited edition Glenfarclas decanter bottlings.

Peter Donnelly, Pol Roger Portfolio director and keeper of the quaich (a traditional Scottish drinking cup), has selected five whiskies, ranging in age, style and price, as part of a collection that celebrates the Grant family’s stewardship of Glenfarclas distillery in Speyside since 1865.

Donnelly told db: “Following on from the huge success of the 25-Year-Old Decanter, released at the end of 2021, we are taking the Glenfarclas connoisseur in an unusual and exiting direction away from the wonderful Sherry Cask.”

The 20-Year-Old Port Pipe Decanter is the next instalment, and promises to deliver something quite distinct from the previous entry, having spent a stint maturing in a barrel that once housed the Douro Valley’s famous fortified wine.

“With this Decanter Series, we are hoping that we can offer the whisky drinking public a different perspective on what Glenfarclas is all about. Although a departure from the customary Glenfarclas sherried-fruit flavour, the core tenets remain the same: the strength of the Glenfarclas spirit, five generations of Grant family pride and the revered quality of their Single Malt Whisky,” Donnelly continued.

“The Port Pipe Decanter offers a much lighter, dryer style than the Glenfarclas core range. We have launched it in June, and in many ways it is perfect for summer drinking; add just a splash of water if you prefer,” he shared.

The tasting notes for the spirit are eucalyptus, raisins and honey on the nose, with rich red fruit and fresh citrus on the palate.

Just 600 decanters, crafted by Glencairn Crystal, of each age statement in the series will be made available with each release. The Port Pipe Decanter retails for around £400.

“We will be launching the third Decanter in the series later this year which, again, will be a tantalising departure from what has come before,” Donnelly disclosed.
