Palmer & Co launches Grand Terroirs 2015 in magnum

Palmer & Co has released its 2015 Grands Terroirs in large format, designed for connoisseurs to enjoy at special occasions.
Speaking to the drinks business, François Demouy, communications and marketing manager at the house, describes what makes this bottling special.

“There are a number of reasons why this cuvée stands out among the benchmark cuvées,” said Demouy. “First and foremost”, he admitted, it is “its origins. This exceptional cuvée is made exclusively from premier and grand cru vineyards from the Montagne de Reims area.” Demouy added: “Its blend is composed of the seven historic crus of the house (Trépail and Villers Marmery for the Chardonnay, Mailly and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir, and Ludes, Chigny-les-Roses, and Rilly-la-Montagne for both Pinot Noir and Meunier).” He pointed out that the magnum format gives the vintage bottling “enhanced complexity”.
He explained: “Champagne matures more slowly in magnums, allowing the wine to develop a greater depth of flavour and complexity. The extended ageing period helps the wine integrate its components and achieve a more balanced profile.” But, he highlighted there is an underlying message that this format conveys. Magnums are commonly used for celebrations and special occasions and observed how “their impressive size makes them ideal for sharing with a larger group of people, creating a sense of conviviality and festivity”.

In terms of what consumers can expect from magnums of Grand Terroirs 2015, he highlighted that “an historic and emblematic signature of Palmer & Co” is important to its overall presence “because Grands Terroirs embodies the quest for harmony and excellence initiated by our founders over 75 years ago”.

Demouy described “the magnum effect” and said “Champagne in larger formats tends to age more gracefully than in standard-sized bottles” giving the fizz and extra edge because “the larger volume-to-surface area ratio in magnums allows for a slower and more controlled ageing process”. He explained: “This results in a more harmonious development of flavours and aromas over time.” The release is set to have a retail price of around £190, said Demouy and revealed: “Grands Terroirs 2015 in magnum will be available from wine merchants specialising in fine wines or in high-end restaurants with a very fine wine list, as well as establishments that are likely to offer magnums by the glass”.

He concluded: “This is a niche category that doesn’t require an extra boost because these wines are aimed at connoisseurs and collectors who know wine and want to treat themselves to an unforgettable tasting experience. This rare wine should be positioned between the vintage cuvées of the grandes marques and the prestige cuvées.”
