Dylan Mulvaney speaks out on Bud Light campaign
Influencer Dylan Mulvaney has responded to the situation around her Bud Light video, calling out the brand for not supporting her in the subsequent backlash from the US conservative right.
In a video posted on Instagram and TikTok, with the caption, “Trans people like beer too”, Mulvaney said that AB InBev, the owner of Bud Light, had not reached out to her since the backlash.
She said: “For a company to hire a trans person and then not publicly stand by them is worse, in my opinion, than not hiring a trans person at all.”
Mulvaney also said the brand’s lack of engagement had also meant it had allowed “customers to be as hateful and transphobic as they want.”
Commenting that she “should have done this video months ago”, she continued that she was “scared of receiving more backlash” and “patiently waited for things to get better, but, surprise, they haven’t really.”
She continued that she was “waiting for the brand to reach out to me, but they never did”.
The influencer said: “I’m not telling you this because I want your pity. I’m telling you this because if this is my experience from a very privileged perspective, know that it is much, much worse for other trans people.”
Mulvaney also went on to say she is a “customer too” and that she has trans friends who love beer, and “lesbian friends who could drink some of those haters under the table”.
She said that supporting trans people “should not be political” and there “shouldn’t be anything divisive about working with us”, and added “I know it’s possible because I’ve worked with some fantastic companies who care.”
The posts have received numerous support from a number of high-profile figures, such as Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser, and broadcaster, Ellen DeGeneres, who said: “We still have a long way to go, but things will get better, and they’ll get better because of you.”
