Constellation Brands acquires luxury Napa brand Domaine Curry
Following seven months of talks, Constellation Brands has bought Domaine Curry for an undisclosed sum from Coup De Foudre in Napa Valley.
Ayesha Curry, who is married to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry, has sold the Napa Valley wine business she co-owns with her sister-in-law to Constellation Brands.
According to Constellation, talks regarding a potential purchase began with Curry and Sydel Curry-Lee in December 2022, with the major drinks company eyeing up the premium Napa producer to bolster its Prisoner Wine Co. offering.
The Domaine Curry brand will now fall under the Prisoner’s portfolio of brands including Prisoner, Saldo, Blindfold and Unshackled.
Domaine Curry wines, which have consistently scored upwards of 94 points in critic tastings, will now be produced by the Prisoner’s winemaker Chrissy Wittman.
“The acquisition of Domaine Curry, a female- and Black-founded wine brand with a successful track record for entrepreneurship, storytelling, and community, provides an opportunity for us to partner with Ayesha and Sydel to build a uniquely positioned luxury wine and culturally relevant lifestyle brand,” said Bukky Ekundayo, vice president and general manager of The Prisoner Wine Company.
“Bringing them into The Prisoner Wine Company portfolio builds on our history of expanding the luxury wine landscape with inclusive and progressive brands, wines, and values.”
Curry and Curry-Lee will remain involved creatively in the brand, Ekundayo revealed.
The Domaine Curry website has been updated with the below statement:
“Domaine Curry is excited to announce that we have been acquired by a notable woman-led powerhouse: The Prisoner Wine Company. With an established, innovative and cutting-edge portfolio, the team at The Prisoner Wine Company makes for an ideal collaboration to further build our luxury wine offerings as a culturally-relevant brand. Together, we’ll bring you more of the high-quality Napa Valley wines you know and love, along with new provocative blends and varietals.”
Curry further announced the acquisition by posting a series of Instagram stories informing followers of the sale.
“Sydel Curry-Lee and I did a thing. [Blessed emoji] feeling blessed and excited,” she captioned one of the posts.
In a joint formal statement, previous owners Curry and Curry-Lee said: “We are so excited to partner with a company that shares our values and aspirations, that can also offer quality sourcing, expert winemaking, and best-in-class DTC, e-commerce, and hospitality resources needed to make more space for women of colour in the luxury wine landscape.”
The addition of Domaine Curry is part of Constellation’s strategy to invest US$100 million in Black- and minority-owned businesses by 2030.
In April, the drinks business revealed how Constellation’s ambitious financial strategy is paying off, with its sales of wines and spirits worth US$462.2 million and its beer division raking in an even more impressive US$1.54 billion in the first quarter of 2023.
