En primeur first releases head out of the gate: Angelus
Château Angélus has become the second estate to release its 2022 en primeur wine, following Château Cheval Blanc this morning – the most expensive release in the past 22 vintages.
The estate released at €350 per bottle ex-négociant, up 32% from 2021’s opening price, Liv-ex has reported, or offered to the international trade at £4,296 per case of 12.
The fine wine marketplace noted that the second highest price on release was the 2016 vintage, at €294 per bottle ex-négociant.
db’s Bordeaux correspondent Colin Hays awarded it a barrel range of 97-99 points, naming it one of the appellation’s “truly great” wines, “Very delineated. Very composed, Quite majestic”. James Suckling, who gave a slightly higher score of 98-99 also commented on its “extremely fine tannins” whose “length and beauty that show incredible depth”, with William Kelley agreeing with Hay’s assessment of 96-98 points.
As pointed out by Liv-ex, the new release price is up 32.1% on the 2021 release, with only three vintages – the 2000, 2005 and 2012 – being more expensive. It pointed to the 2015, 2016 and 2019 vintages, all rated at 97 points by Neal Martin, as offering more relative value.
