Sogevinus declares 2021 a vintage year for Single Quintas

Sogevinus Fine Wines has declared the launch of two Single Quinta vintages, Kopke Quinta de São Luiz and Burmester Quinta do Arnozelo, from the “difficult” 2021 Douro harvest.

Sogevinus owns 430 hectares in the Douro Valley (248ha of which are under vine) and produces an average of 9.5 million bottles of wine per annum. In addition to Kopke and Burmester, Sogevinus’ Port house portfolio includes Cálem, Barros and Quinta Boavista.

Carlos Alves, head winemaker for Port wines at Sogevinus, said: “The 2021 campaign was defined by the irregular pace of grape maturation, which resulted in low levels of sugar, inducing our winemaking and viticulture teams to work closely with the aim to determine the exact optimum picking dates – an increasingly critical factor in the final quality of the wines.”

High February rainfall, a mild spring and hot, dry summer was capped off with further rain in early September, which slightly delayed ripening (the Port wine grape harvest itself began on 1 September). Grapes picked before the rainfall produced wines that showed greater aromatic concentration, while those picked afterwards resulted in more elegant, fresh wines.

“Although this harvest was a difficult one, we are pleased with the wines it’s produced and so far I think the wines will stand out for their elegance rather than structure, and they will certainly age beautifully given their natural acidity – both traits that qualify for excellent wines,” added Alves.

With the Kopke Quinta de S. Luiz Vintage Port 2021, of which 12,133 75 centilitre bottles and 600 magnums were produced, Alves pointed out “notes of spice, ripe red fruit, balsamic and resin”. While Touriga Nacional constitutes a third of the blend, the remainder is made of some 35 grape varieties.

As for the Burmester Quinta do Arnozelo Vintage 2021, 8,830 75cl bottles and 250 magnums produced, Alves detected “orange blossom, black fruit, such as black plum, and cassis”. It is a blend of 35% Touriga Nacional, 45% Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Alicante Bouschet.

Both fortified wines will be available to purchase in the last quarter of this year.
