‘Landmark’ £3 million Wetherspoons set to open in London

A new £3 million Wetherspoons boasting a giant beer garden overlooking the Thames is opening at the O2 in Greenwich, even as nearly 40 of the pub chain’s venues close for good.

Budget pub chain Wetherspoons is opening a ‘landmark’ new location at the O2 in Greenwich next week. With a 3,800-square-foot beer garden with views across the Thames, The Stargazer will throw open its doors to customers on 21 March.

In a perhaps tactically astute move, The Stargazer is opening directly opposite Mamma Mia! The Party, ready to mop up starcrossed ABBA fans looking to carry on the frivolities (or pre-game the high-octane dinner of dreams).

In any case, the new ‘Spoons will be open 10am to 12.15am Monday-Sunday, serving up all we’ve come to expect from the budget pub chain.

The Stargazer will draw inspiration from its surroundings in the form of Greenwich Observatory.

“Sculptures and artwork are displayed behind the bar, symbolizing astronomy instruments, views and stargazers, as well as the Stargazer’s other meanings – a lily and a venomous fish.” A spokesperson revealed.

“The bespoke carpet, fitted throughout the pub, also draws inspiration from orbiting stars and planets and the equipment used by astrologers and astronomers.”

Wetherspoons owns and operates 844 pubs and hotels across the UK, though recently announced a list of nearly 40 venues it is either in the process of selling, or has already sold.

Chairman Tim Martin has been outspoken about the issue he feels is causing the most damage to his business: tax ‘disparity’ between pubs and supermarkets.
