Institute of Masters of Wine welcomes Catena Institute as new research associate
Catena Institute of Wine, founded by Argentinian vintner Dr Laura Catena, has been named as the third academic and research associate of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW).
Julian Gore-Booth, IMW executive director, said: “The IMW is very excited to welcome the Catena Institute of Wine as an academic and research associate. Through this association we will help students and MWs access scientific knowledge around winemaking and viticulture in South America and help South American students broaden their tasting skills.”
The Catena institute was created as an offshoot of family winery Bodega Catena Zapata to advance Argentina’s winemaking regions and produce wines which capitalise on improved scientific research. The Catena Institute also works alongside universities to advance technological wine knowledge.
Founded in 1902, the Argentinean winery is known for making use of high-altitude terroirs to produce its wines. Dr Laura Catena inherited the business from her father, famous vintner Nicolas Catena Zapata. Laura Catena was named the drinks business ‘Woman of the Year’ 2022.
Laura Catena, managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata, who is on the board of the Catena Institute, said the partnership was particularly exciting due to the IMW’s “focus on increasing diversity within the wine world, and addressing the global threat of climate change.
She added: “At the Catena Institute of Wine we believe that a scientific approach is essential in order to preserve the ancient art of winemaking for the generations to come.”
The fourth generation winemaker will also be the closing keynote speaker at this year’s international IMW symposium in Wiesbaden, Germany.
The Argentinian centre becomes the third research and industry associate to join the IMW’s mission to promote excellence, interaction and learning across all sectors of the global wine community.
