Gwyneth Paltrow ski crash man ‘can no longer enjoy wine tastings’

A man who is suing Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow over an alleged ski crash that left him concussed and with four broken ribs is no longer able to enjoy wine tastings as a result of complications, a neuroradiology specialist has told a court in Utah.

Terry Sanderson, a 76-year-old retired eye doctor, has lost “the ability to function at a high level”, the court heard. Neuroradiology specialist Dr Wendell Gibby said Mr Sanderson had “deteriorated abruptly” in the wake of the crash. He is seeking damages of $300,000 (£244,000).

Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyers, meanwhile, have called the claims  “utter BS”. She is countersuing for $1 in damages in addition to attorney’s fees.

Dr Gibby told the court that Dr Sanderson exhibited signs of traumatic brain damage that had altered his behaviour in the wake of the skiing incident.

“Terry had been a high-functioning, active person,” Dr Gibby said. “Every day he was doing lots of things. Meeting groups, wine tasting, skiing, volunteering.

“After the accident, he deteriorated abruptly and many of the activities he loved to do, he stopped doing.”

Dr Sanderson has alleged that Ms Paltrow slammed into him and left the scene, though the actress claims it was in fact he who collided with her.

Ms Paltrow’s lawyers content that Dr Sanderson is to blame for the accident, and that he had several medical conditions prior to the collision – including hearing and vision loss from a stroke and occasional depression.

Dr Gibby testified that it was unlikely Dr Sanderson would ever recover from the injuries he sustained, which the expert said were consistent with a head-on collision.

Under cross-examination, though, Dr Gibby did concede that there was no clear evidence that the alleged brain damage suffered by Dr Sanderson were a result of the ski crash.
