Penfolds unveils new luxury releases
Penfolds has unveiled its latest release, including a multi-vintage Chardonnay and the latest releases in its collaboration with Champagne Thiénot, at an event in Paris.
The new limited edition Chardonnay is a special blend of five of the best vintages from Yattarna , comprising wine from the 2021, 2016, 2014, 2012 and 2011 vintages.
Only 2,220 bottles of were released with a retail price tag of AU$875 (around US$595 or £495) which will be available worldwide following its global release in April 2023.
The wine for Penfolds V was selected and blended by Penfolds chief winemaker, Peter Gago and Penfolds white winemaker, Kym Schroeter and aims to epitomise “the finesse, restraint, and character of modern Australian Chardonnay”, Gago said.
Penfolds Yattarna was first released in 1995 after detailed experimentation and 144 winemaking trials. It is described as “a wine of meticulous refinement” that was inspired by “generations of Penfolds winemakers” and gained a reputation as one of Australia’s finest wines.
“Today, we see the patience, courage, and evolution of Penfolds white winemaking endeavours personified in this new multi-vintage blend,” the company said.
Gago described it as “different”, ”evocative”, “intriguing and confronting”. “Yattarna — little by little, gradually… Bin 144 dressed differently,” he said.
The event also saw the latest vintage releases from the collaboration between the Aussie wine brand and Champagne Thiénot that was announced in 2019.
The 2013 Avize Blanc de Blancs & 2013 Aÿ Blanc de Noirs (Grand Cru) Champagnes
The two wines are the latest releases in the partnership, which included the inaugural 2012 Chardonnay Pinot Noir Cuveé, two Grand Cru Champagnes (2012 Avize Blanc de Bancs & 2012 Aÿ Blanc de Noirs) and a Champagne Brut Rosé NV.
“The wines represent the continued joint efforts of Champagne Thiénot Chef de Cave, Nicolas Uriel, who together with Penfolds chief winemaker, Peter Gago, shared an agreed style and quality ambitions,” the company said.
The wines were presented by Gago and Stanislas Thiénot, managing director of Champagne Thiénot at an event in Paris last week.
