Aldi offers free wine in exchange for honest reviews

Discount supermarket Aldi is offering a group of lucky shoppers free bottles of wine. The catch? All they have to do is review them.

Thirty members of the Aldi Wine Club will be set to work to trial, test and review three bottles of the supermarket chain’s new wine range.

At the end of a six-week period, the group of lucky wine lovers will post product reviews on their Instagram and Twitter accounts alongside the #AldiWineClub hashtag.

Aldi has set some ground rules for its handpicked wine tasters. Sam Capron, the discount chain‘s wine expert is encouraging participants to keep the wines somewhere with a fairly consistent cool temperature, as big temperature fluctuations are bad for wine. Storing it above the oven is therefore a big no-no.

The Aldi Wine Club members are also being encouraged to smell the wines, to help release the aromas and pick up on flavours that your tongue otherwise wouldn’t.

Participants should also never serve whites or rosé wines too cold, as it makes them harder to smell. Aromas become more distinct as the wine warms up in the glass.

In other news, after a lawsuit lasting more than a year, the High Court in London has ruled that discount supermarket chain Aldi infringed the design of Marks & Spencer’s festive gin liqueur bottle.

The light-up M&S bottle was released in the run-up to Christmas 2020 and proved to be a hit with consumers. The following year, Aldi released its own The Infusionist Small Batch gin which, like the M&S product, also had a bell-shaped light up bottle with gold glitter within. In December that year, M&S sued Aldi over alleged copyright infringement.
